It came a day early…no not Christmas…it was left on the front door step…yes my Kindle (along with its accompanying case) was left on my front door step…fortunately not with the neighbours or behind a shrub as the web delivery info explains is possible if you are not there to receive it.
My wife gathered it from its cold perch on the “welcome mat” and brought it into its new home…How romantic is it to have a new Kindle…shall I spin you a story? Upon coming home my wife informed me of my Kindle’s arrival which brought a smile to my face that grew when my eyes saw the package sitting there waiting for my eager paws.
My Purple Kindle (which is actually physically white but Purple in my heart) is a thing of elegant beauty….slender, graceful and ergonomically designed! It sits well in the hands and is wonderfully pleasant to read from! In fact it has exceeded my expectations. It charged faster than the instructions said and so far it has downloaded books faster than the one minute advertised. Also the case works remarkable well and I recommend acquiring a case for your Kindle when you buy it.
In the first “My Purple Kindle” article I requested suggestions for my first downloaded book…Looney helpfully suggested Newton’s Philosophiae Principia Mathematica and although I admit to being tempted by this suggestion I still did not give in to the dark side…purchasing a book about numbers for my Kindle the portable library of words was just a bit unsettling to start with…It lacked the romance of the occasion…
I meditated upon my focus in life and centered upon my first purchase…The Message a modern paraphrase of the Bible which I highly recommend. The second book I downloaded was Stones into Schools by Greg Mortenson the writer of Three Cups of Tea which I reviewed here. I will soon also review Stones into Schools here at The Purple Bookmark.
You may now be thinking “where is the romance in all of that?” Well perhaps you are correct…although my first download of The Message will help keep me spiritually sound and Stones into Schools may encourage and motivate me to express my spirituality in a compassionate way I think to start my new reading relationship with My Purple Kindle a fine romantic novel would be good…certainly these are not typical of the variety of books I read…so that being said it had to be a literary classic…
Pride and Prejudice is of course the first to spring to mind…However recently I happened to receive an unabridged audio version of the book…which I have been planning to make my way through soon (and review here)…so why then get it for My Purple Kindle (plus we have the book which I have already read)? Thus I struck upon a value added idea…my third download (and yes also soon to be reviewed) was Pride and Prejudice and Zombies!

Congratulations on your bouncy bundle of joy! Just wondering why the Kindle and not the Sony?
ReplyDeleteRegarding romantic classics - I just read Jane Eyre for the first time. It's been on my shelf for like ever. Lots of twists and drama in that one and really big and obscure words. And pleasantly surprising, lot's of biblical and spiritual references that really hit the mark.
Why thank you! My sweet slender and information packed Purple Kindle certainly is a bundle of joy…one I am nurturing with more downloads!
ReplyDeleteI compared the Kindle to the Sony Reader and other competitors…I should say here that I do have a Sony TV and Sony digital recorder so I do like some Sony products…However I found that overall I preferred the Kindle for reading. The two are similar in many ways but the Kindle is ahead in more categories by my rating.
I found the Sony Reader store to be far inferior to Amazon.com. For example I just went to its web page:
http://ebookstore.sony.com/downpage/index_b.html
…and Instead of a store I got a screen that said “We’ll be back soon…” Saying they are doing an update and will be up in “a few short hours”. This is not the first time I was received this way at that web page. Whereas ALL of my Amazon experiences have been good (of course I did mention in my previous article some of my frustrations, but overall Amazon has been great to do business with). The Sony book collection is far inferior to Amazon.com (this is probably the trump card, if I am going to be buying digital books from Amazon.com then I may as well have their device).
The performance of the two devices is similar, Sony has the edge in a couple of places (perhaps battery life, Sony says it can go two weeks without a charge the Kindle one week, one week is no problem for me) and Amazon has the advantage in a handful of others…One can debate resolution, buttons etc…Then we have preferences…I don’t like the stylus the Sony has, some versions of the Sony allow pages to be turned by touch screen but I prefer the buttons on the side of the Kindle they work better ergonomically for me (and I think most people), the Kindle wins easily in the memory department (more space for storing books) the Sony also has add-ons for memory etc…I want a simpler device to manage not a sportscar in need of expansion packs, the Kindle has more font sizes, much faster downloading of books, I prefer the overall look of the Kindle screen and the “frame”…
I LOVE my Kindle keyboard! The Sony has a virtual keyboard and I prefer a non-virtual keyboard…I suppose I would pick a Blackberry over an iPhone…I found the online Sony store had less helpful information about things I wanted to know than the Kindle web page.
Overall in my experience the Kindle is more like a futuristic book to me…the Sony is more like a fancy gadget. To me this shows that the Kindle came from a book lovers point of view and the Sony came from a techy point of view….All this being said I have not used a Sony device…but also so far I LOVE my Kindle…I have found myself right from the beginning emerged in the reading material not encumbered by the Kindle. It is a pretty clever device…if you want me to show it to you give me a phone call…
Any help?
The Bronte sisters were amazingly talented at their craft particularly when you consider their ages…if they had each lived 20 years longer they could have written amazing works…all three died fairly young if I remember correctly. I completely agree with your reflections upon the book.
